stop() · play() · rewind() · seek() --- The Transport
Four cues that work the transport from a score or the live console, as its buttons do:
stop() stop play() start rewind() back to the start (the Home key) seek(30) to 30 seconds into the score
None of them is a toggle: running one twice does what running it once does. Toggling is the play button's and the space bar's.
They work the transport, not sound: hush() stops sound.
stop() and play()
stop() stops playback, whatever it was doing. It does not end the score
and it does not freeze the system. play() starts it.
stop() also cancels a pause(dur:) still counting down. That
countdown belongs to the server and resumes every client when it reaches
zero, whatever they are doing, so an ending that landed inside one would be
undone by a timer nobody could see, seconds after the piece had finished.
stop() used to toggle (stop if playing, start if stopped). Every score
that used it meant "stop here", at the end of the piece, and a toggle there
is a coin toss: a score that arrives at its last cue already stopped, held
by a pause(dur:) still running, would be set going again and scroll on
past the end of the material. The older spellings are still read:
stop(play:0) the same as stop() stop(play:1) the same as play()
rewind()
Back to the start of the score, as the Home key and the ⏮ button: the cues behind are re-armed and the stopwatch is reset. Playing or stopped stays as it was.
seek()
Moves the playhead. The number is seconds on the score's own clock (the
seek bar's), or with % a share of the score; a sign makes it relative to
where the playhead is now:
seek(30) 30 seconds into the score seek(-10) 10 seconds back seek(+10) 10 seconds on seek(50%) half way through seek(-5%) back a twentieth of the score
Playing, it plays on from the new place; stopped, it stays stopped. It
never goes past either end of the score. To go to a named place — a
marker, a rehearsal mark, a page — use nav().
Syntax
stop() stop(uid:NAME) stop(next:CUEID) play() rewind() seek(SECONDS) seek(±SECONDS) seek(PERCENT%) seek(±PERCENT%)
stop() parameters
param required description
uid ✖ Only needed if multiple
identical stop(...) cues
appear
next ✖ Trigger another cue
immediately after stop(...)
runs
Behaviour
- each briefly ignores the server's echo of its own change, so the change is not undone by the network
- the other clients follow, as they follow the transport buttons
- a projector window (
projector()) does not runplay(),rewind()orseek()itself: it follows the laptop's transport, and a relativeseek(-10)run in both would go back twice stop(next:...)triggers another cue immediately (does not wait for resume / spacebar)
Examples
stop() stop(next:nav(End)) play() seek(-10) seek(75%) rewind()
